New Year’s Resolutions

Try adding a little magic!

The New Year is a time when many reflect upon the year that has gone by and the things that they hope to achieve in the year to come.

Many people set New Year’s resolutions but very few of the resolutions survive January! Why is this and what can you do about it? How can you help your intentions stick and move forward on the path of reaching your desires?

Well, you could try using a little bit of magic…

SPELL CASTING VS GOAL SETTING

Casting a spell and setting a goal have many things in common. In fact casting a spell is basically setting a goal but with a bit of extra metaphysical help. Casting a spell is a great way to focus on what you want in life and set your intentions towards your goals. Spell work help us to align with what we want so that we can more easily manifest it onto the physical plane.

This year why not try using a bit of magic to assist you with your New Years resolutions? Spell-casting is the art of identifying, raising, and directing energy to actualize our intentions. Witches work with many different tools to help them in the art of manifestation. They work with nature, the timings of the year and use tools such as visualisation.

Witches often work with certain days or cycles such as a new moon for new beginnings. This New Year comes with the extra energy of a full moon. The New Year is also already a magical time. We are at the beginning of longer days following the passing of the winter solstice. As the sun starts to make its return to the northern hemisphere and more light returns to the world it seems a good time to think forward. Who do you wish to be at the end of 2021? Who are you becoming?

POTENTIAL METHODS

I would like to share with you for some of the tools I am using to help me manifest my New Year’s resolutions this year. These include the use of a vision board, crystals, visualisation and working with the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi.

VISION BOARD

I have made a vision board to visually represent my dreams. For those of you who are new to the concept of a vision board this involves finding pictures that visually represent your goals. A key goal for me this year is to improve my personal finances. I have included pictures of successful investing and saving. I would also like a better behaved dog so I have included a picture of a well behaved dog on mine! (Perhaps by next Christmas my dog Marble will be making me tea in the morning like the amazingly well behaved dog in the film The Grinch!!) The act of creating a vision board can be useful for gaining clarity around the things that you want. Another great thing about a vision board is that you can place it in a prime location where you will see it every day so it serves as a visual reminder for the goals that you have set yourself. Seeing the image of your goal achieved can be a very powerful motivator.

CRYSTAL ENERGY

I’m a huge fan of crystals. Everything in the world emits an energetic vibration including us and crystals. These wonderful stones vibrate at different frequencies and they can assist us to tune into the energy of the thing that we wish to manifest.

I have made a crystal grid, using rose quartz, citrine and emerald. I have chosen to work with the crystal citrine as it is often referred to as abundance crystal and is therefore well suited to assisting me with my financial goals. Citrine is also a stone that helps to strengthen the 3rd chakra, our seat of will and is therefore also a great stone for strengthening one’s personal will.

I love what Naisha Ahsian writes about citrine in ‘The Book of Stones’,

“Much of our experience on the earth plane is gained from our attempts to transform our dreams and wishes into physical tangibility. This is the process of manifestation, creating form from the energetic blueprints of our thoughts beliefs and desires. Citrine is our foremost ally in the process of manifestation. The vibration of citrine stimulates our creative energy and our will.”

The use of a crystal grid helps to amplify the energy of the stones however I also highly recommend the use of a “pocket stone”. I frequently carry a crystal around with me, usually in my pocket, or attached to jewellery. If there is ever a time during the day where I need to reconnect with my goals I can touch it and I am anchored to my intentions.

WORKING WITH A DIETY OR ACHETYPE

In her wonderful book ‘Awakening Shakti’ Sally Kempton talks about ways of working with the Goddesses of yoga. She describes the aim of deity practice to not just be about honouring and attracting the blessings of a particular Goddess but to be about becoming the deity in human form.

I am working with the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi. Lakshmi is the Goddess of Abundance, Prosperity, Fame and Good Fortune. Part of working with Lakshmi is about learning to cultivate an auspicious mind and to tap into the inner experience of abundance.

If there is a particular quality that you wish to strengthen within yourself then you can consider working with a God or an archetype figure who represents the qualities you seek.

SETTING THE MAGIC IN MOTION

Using the above tools are in themselves very powerful however it really helps to set aside some time to officially cast your spell.

When I was ready to cast my spell I gathered all my tools together, my vision board, my Lakshmi picture and crystals. I had some candles ready for spell work which I also anointed with an essential oil.  I ensured that I had a time and space where I would not be disturbed, I lit some candles and sat in a meditative posture. I spent some time in meditation focusing on how I want to feel when my goals are manifest. Visualisation is a really powerful tool to use and has long been used by athletes.

Whilst there are no strict rules and you can add in whatever elements you feel comfortable with to you spell work, I would say that candles are a fabulous and simple spell ingredient. You can choose a colour that matches with your intention, for example a pink or green candle can be used for a love spell or yellow for attracting abundance and joy. Lighting candles is one of the oldest and most traditional ways to let the universe know what you want. As the candle burns your intentions transform into smoke are released out into the atmosphere.

SMART SPELLS

I think it’s great to dream big and to make use of whatever metaphysical help that you feel drawn to. After all if you ‘reach for the moon, even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.’

However your spells, like your goals work most effectively if they are SMART

  • Specific (simple, sensible, significant).
  • Measurable (meaningful, motivating).
  • Achievable (agreed, attainable).
  • Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based).
  • Time bound (time-based, time limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive).
